How do I know if I need a building permit?

How do I get a building permit?
Building permits must be applied for at the Community Development Department offices. If you are applying for a residential building permit, you may print out and complete the Building Permit Application.
How do I schedule a building inspection?
You can request an inspection by calling the Building Inspection Hotline at (707) 551-4619. You must call before 6:30 am for a same day inspection. Calls received after that time will be scheduled the next business day. To cancel an inspection please call the office at (707) 647-4581.
What can I do with my property? What zoning district is it in?
The options for land use depend on the zoning district and General Plan land use designation of your property. To find out what your property's zoning is, check the Zoning Map. The City's Zoning Ordinance will detail kinds of uses allowed in that zoning district. If you have questions, e-mail the Assistant Planner at dmiraldi@cityofamericancanyon.org. Please include your property address and/or Assesor's parcel number.

California Building Code, 2007 version, with amendments in Cahpter 16 of the City of American Canyon Municipal Code.

What are the design wind load and wind exposure that must be used for structures constructed in the City of American Canyon?
80 mph mph is the Basic Wind Speed for American Canyon. Exposure C for all properties west of Highway 29, Exposure B for all properties east of Highway 29.
What fire protection measures are required in new construction?
The American Canyon Fire District requires fire sprinklers in all new residential construction and in all new commercial construction greater than 600 square feet.
What are the interior finish requirements for garages?
All walls separating garages from living spaces are required to have 1/2" drywall. All garage ceilings with habitable space above are required to have 5/8" drywall as per the 2007 California Building Code.
Is NMC (Romex type wire) allowed in commercial buildings?
Electrical wiring materials and methods are permitted as specified in the 2007 California Electrical Code without amendment.
Is plastic piping (ABS, CPVC, PVC) allowed in commercial contruction?
Piping materials are permitted as specified in the 2007 California Plumbing Code without amendment.
